Several Democrats joined House Republicans in their attack of Biden-approved California standards that would push electric vehicle sales to ramp up over the next decade.
Thirteen Democrats supported H.J. Res. 87, from Rep. John James (R-Mich.), against new rules for trucks. And 10 Democrats voted yes on H.R. Res. 89, from Rep. Jay Obernolte (R-Calif.), targeting mandates on emissions such as nitrogen oxides.
“Maybe in California they can plug their trucks into a tree but in the rest of the country we are relying on an energy grid” that is at least half reliant on coal and gas,” James said during debate, adding, “We are not afraid of the future, but we demand to be part of it.”
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), who often bucks his party on environmental issues, was the sole Republican to vote no on the measures. A vote on a third resolution for passenger cars, H.J. Res. 88, from Rep. John Joyce (R-Pa.), will likely pass the House on Thursday.
