How energy, climate are playing in 4 key Senate contests

Democrats are playing defense this election cycle, with energy prices, renewables and the Green New Deal being featured in tight races.

The battle for control of the Senate is heating up, and energy and climate policy is at play in many of the key races.

In races across several battleground states — Montana, Ohio, Nevada and Maryland — debate has broken out on energy prices, renewables and the Green New Deal. In some cases, endangered Democrats have sought to distance themselves from Biden administration policies.

Democrats hold a narrow 51-49 majority but are squarely on defense — with many opportunities to lose seats and few, if any, to gain them. In many scenarios, Republicans are favored to win.

Republicans are nearly guaranteed to flip the West Virginia seat currently held by Senate Energy and Natural Resources Chair Joe Manchin, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, following his decision last year not to run for reelection. Republican Gov. Jim Justice, a coal mining mogul, is slated to win.
