Informal talks on permitting happening amid dealmaking pause

Democrats say no substantive negotiations are occurring on a bipartisan deal.

Senators are continuing to have informal talks about permitting reform, even as the Democratic pause on dealmaking remains in place.

But the key Democratic negotiator was adamant Thursday that formal negotiations won’t restart until the Trump administration “stops screwing around.”

“There’s obviously going to continue to be lots of talking,” said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, the top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works Committee. “I’m sure permitting talks are continuing, but negotiations between me and her are not.”

He was referring to EPW Chair Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), who said Thursday that, “We’re trying to get everything back on track, so we are talking.”
