A top Interior Department official backed six pro-mining bills during a hearing Wednesday before facing an onslaught of criticism from Democrats on renewable energy.

Adam Suess, acting assistant secretary for lands and minerals management, said the bills would fulfill President Donald Trump’s goal of reviving the coal sector and expanding mining — both on land and in international waters.

“The policy advanced by the bills before us today are commonsense, rational and much needed,” Suess told the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources.

On the agenda was Chair Pete Stauber’s (R-Minn.) H.R. 4090, which would codify certain presidential orders on mining and mineral development.
