Interior, other agencies open new front in social media wars

The administration is looking to reach left-leaning users on Bluesky.

The Interior Department has come out swinging on the Bluesky social media site with a barrage of partisan and trolling posts that some critics think go too far.

Along with several other Cabinet-level agencies, Interior popped up on Bluesky on Oct. 17. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum boosted the agency’s new social media profile in a post on X.

“Interior wants to reach ALL Americans to share our mission for American Energy Dominance,” Burgum declared on Oct. 17. “Check us out on Bluesky!”

Bluesky casts itself as an alternative to Elon Musk’s X website and has become associated with more liberal users. Interior’s new Bluesky handle, in the parlance of the internet, appears to be an effort to troll the political left.
