IRA defenders tie Trump tariffs to climate tax credits

A group of House Republicans fighting to save parts of the Democrats’ 2022 climate law is refining its message with President Donald Trump in mind. They are arguing that an American manufacturing boom will need all sources of energy.

Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.), co-chair of the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus, suggested the administration may like the tax incentives as part of helping promote U.S. manufacturing.

Trump has suggested scrapping the entire Inflation Reduction Act. And on Capitol Hill, Republicans are trying to figure out how much to keep.

“Especially now that tariffs are trying to bring manufacturing back to the U.S. Can’t have manufacturing if you don’t have energy. There’s a demand for energy to keep growing,” said Garbarino, who organized a recent letter of 21 Republicans wanting to keep at least some Inflation Reduction Act credits for renewable energy, advanced manufacturing and other activities.
