Republicans are seeking to paint the Montana Democrat as out of touch — for driving a hybrid.

As Sen. Jon Tester gears up for a tough reelection fight, he is feuding with Republicans’ campaign arm over, of all things, the car he drives.

The spat centers on the Montana Democrat’s choice to drive a Toyota Prius, a hybrid vehicle. This week, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has been relentlessly mocking him as a “swamp creature” in an apparent attempt to paint the native Montanan as out of touch with the folks back home.

Tester hasn’t taken kindly to the criticism. “What a bunch of jackasses,” he told HuffPost on Monday.

Tester is facing reelection this year, challenged by businessman Tim Sheehy in what is likely one of the GOP’s top opportunities to flip a seat in their quest to take the Senate majority.
