A group of young people whose landmark climate lawsuit against the federal government was quashed in May are asking a West Coast federal appeals court to revisit their challenge.

Attorneys for the 21 youth behind Juliana v. United States on Monday filed a petition for rehearing before a larger slate of judges of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, along with plea for the court to vacate its earlier order rejecting their case.

Such petitions are rarely granted. If the 9th Circuit declines, the Juliana challengers’ next stop may be the U.S. Supreme Court.
