Rep. Katie Porter is pledging to upgrade the grid, invest in renewable energy, address drought and protect public lands in California as she seeks an open Senate seat there.
The Democrat’s six-point plan to fight climate change, dubbed “Planet for Our Future” and shared exclusively with E&E News, comes as Porter is seeking to shore up her progressive credentials and edge out her main competitor, fellow Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).
The primary election is March 5, just two weeks away. Polling shows Schiff with a significant lead in the race, with Porter and Republican Steve Garvey in a tie for second. The top two candidates, regardless of party, will advance to the general election in November.
Schiff released his own climate platform last week. It is extensive for a candidate who has not focused as heavily on environmental issues as other policy areas. As the former chair of the House Intelligence Committee, he is best-known as the leader of then-President Donald Trump’s first impeachment inquiry.
