Maine independent Sen. Angus King added an amendment to the Senate’s defense authorization this week to amend the statute governing the Pentagon’s involvement in wind project permits.

The Senate Armed Services Committee approved its fiscal 2027 National Defense Authorization Act behind closed doors Wednesday but has yet to release it. Panel aides briefed reporters Thursday.

King’s amendment would revise the Department of Defense’s Siting Clearinghouse review process, responsible for evaluating proposed energy projects to ensure they do not interfere with military radars, training routes and national security.

Renewable energy groups, including the American Clean Power Association, have accused the administration of relying on the process to intentionally stall more than 100 wind projects for more than a year. A coalition of developers have sued the Pentagon in response.
