In the hours following the death of Pope Francis, Democratic lawmakers called attention to his advocacy around climate change.

During his 12 years as pope, Francis regularly spoke about environmental protection and the need to address climate change. In 2015, he published an encyclical — an official papal letter — calling for action to protect the environment

In a statement Monday, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi cited Pope Francis’ encyclical on the climate as one of his groundbreaking accomplishments.
