Senate Energy and Natural Resources Chair Mike Lee introduced legislation Monday that would allow people and companies faster access to federal courts in disputes with the Interior Department.

Agencies across the federal government rely on administrative mechanisms for addressing permitting disputes or rule violations. The “Free to Exit Administrative Tribunals (FEAT) Act” would allow parties to bypass that process.

“Americans should not be forced to navigate administrative tribunals for years before they can have their day in court,” Lee said in a statement.

The Utah Republican said he introduced the bill in response to the Supreme Court ruling in Securities and Exchange Commission v. Jarkesy, which said people and companies facing civil penalties have the right to a jury trial.
