Second Amendment enthusiasts are suing the federal government to overturn restrictions on guns in national parks buildings, setting up a legal fight over whether visitors to destinations like Yosemite and Yellowstone can carry firearms into gift shops, bathrooms and museums operated by the National Park Service.
The Second Amendment Foundation and the Firearms Policy Coalition filed the lawsuit last month in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas alongside Gary Zimmerman, a Texas gun owner who frequents national parks across the country on lifetime passes he shares with his wife.
Zimmerman carries a handgun during his excursions to parks, which have included Big Bend National Park in Texas and Arches National Park in Utah, but he must disarm when entering most park buildings under federal law and some park regulations.
If successful, the lawsuit could have broader implications for restrictions that currently bar carrying guns in federal buildings.
