Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Ed Markey is working on legislation to increase transparency and good governance among grid operators.

Markey released a discussion draft titled the “BETTER Grid Operators Act“— short for “Building Effective, Transparent, Transmission-Friendly Electric Regional Grid Operators Act” — on Friday.

It aims to promote public engagement and transparency within regional grid operators, transmission planning regions and electricity marketplaces to boost efficiency and keep costs for customers low.

“Together, we can continue to make progress toward a grid that includes everyone, works for everyone, and supports a livable future,” said Markey, who chairs the Senate Environment and Public Works Subcommittee on Clean Air, Climate and Nuclear Safety.
