The comments by the Interior secretary come after a month of controversy surrounding the work on the pool, which subsequently experienced an algae bloom and peeling liner.

A 350-foot gash that President Donald Trump has repeatedly said was sliced through the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool liner by vandals is actually the combined total of numerous smaller cuts, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Tuesday.

Burgum, who has become the point person for carrying out Trump’s renovation of fountains and monuments in the nation’s capital, clarified the claim during an hourlong interview with a conservative podcaster.

He also discussed the president’s keen interest in sprucing up Washington, the media coverage of the reflecting pool rehab job, public opposition to artificial intelligence and how the National Park Service could emulate Chick-fil-A to speed visitors through busy park entrances.

Speaking on “The Katie Miller Podcast,” Burgum said the renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool had been “99.999 percent perfect” despite alleged vandalism.
