Yassamin Ansari was already a seasoned climate advocate when then-President Donald Trump announced in 2017 that he would pull the United States out of the landmark Paris Agreement.
The news was a gut-punch for her then. The Democrat from Arizona had recently wrapped up a two-year stint at the United Nations, where she helped craft and implement the accord — the world’s first binding climate action plan.
Now, Trump is set to retake the Oval Office this month with a promise to withdraw the U.S. once again, and Ansari will be fighting him from a new perch in the House.
“I am livid about it; I think it’s extremely irresponsible,” said Ansari, who worked on the climate accord after graduating from Stanford University.
