Washington state Rep. April Berg has a message for her fellow progressives considering moratoriums on artificial intelligence data centers: Don’t do it.
The Democratic lawmaker — known for helping enact an income tax this year on her state’s millionaires — made a splash in Chicago this week when she urged her colleagues at a summit hosted by the National Conference of State Legislatures to embrace the resource-hungry facilities.
“Data centers are ubiquitous to everything we do in life. Period. Full stop. They are not going away,” she said to the standing-room-only crowd of lawmakers and aides.
“If somebody sends me a spicy email about data centers, I say please, please, please hand-walk that to my office,” she said. “Because if you email me over a server about a data center and how you want it to go away — the hypocrisy speaks for itself.”
