CALGARY, Alberta — Meta announced on Wednesday that it is investing $10 billion to construct its first data center in Canada.
The 1 gigawatt data center, to be located just north of Edmonton, is expected to consume nearly as much energy as the city itself, which has more than 1 million residents. Meta says it will pay the full costs of the data center’s energy use.
The data center is expected to be completed within the next three years, creating 3,000 construction jobs and 300 operational jobs.
This is Meta’s 33rd data center worldwide.
