Senate Energy and Natural Resources Chair Mike Lee of Utah traveled with top White House officials last week to mineral-rich Greenland, a move that drew the ire of Danish leadership who criticized the trip as disrespectful.

Lee was part of a delegation that included Vice President JD Vance, second lady Usha Vance, national security adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright. The group touched down on Friday and visited the Pituffik Space Base, the only U.S. military base on the Arctic island.

“What you do here makes us safer,” Lee told military personnel at a press briefing on the base. “I look forward to learning more about what you do here and about the future of the United States and its interaction with this amazing land in this part of the world.”

The trip, which was cast as a cultural visit, drew significant criticism and was cut short because of possible protests.
