A Montana power company has signed up to join California’s new Western electricity market, a boost for the nascent initiative.

What happened: BHE Montana announced Monday that it has signed an agreement to participate in the California Independent System Operator’s new Extended Day-Ahead Market.

Why it matters: The EDAM now has formal commitments from eight participants, a signal that the market is continuing to attract new utilities.

In a statement, BHE Montana CEO Ed Rihn said that joining the EDAM would create “additional opportunities to access lower-cost resources, better manage system conditions, and support reliable electric service for Montana customers and across the region.”
