Musk threatens judges foiling his government-busting agenda

Judicial impeachments are rare, but legal experts worry that the calls will further damage public trust in the courts.

Elon Musk has a response to federal judges standing in the way of the Trump administration’s ambitions to downsize the federal government — remove them from office.

President Donald Trump’s right-hand man has personally called for or backed the impeachment of judges who are presiding over lawsuits challenging efforts by his so-called Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, to slash federal funding and terminate staff at agencies like EPA.

Legal experts say the Trump administration’s posture threatens to upend the careful balance among the three branches of government — executive, legislative and judiciary — that are supposed to keep an eye on one another to prevent one branch from gaining too much power.

On Thursday, Musk shared a social media post from a Republican lawmaker announcing articles of impeachment against a federal judge who blocked the administration’s pause on foreign aid. Earlier last month, Musk called for a federal judge in New York to be booted from office after stopping DOGE from accessing Americans’ sensitive data at the Treasury Department.
