House Democrats are laying the groundwork to pick apart the Trump administration’s actions on energy and the environment should they take over the chamber following the midterm elections, and the Natural Resources Committee wants to play a leading role.
Democrats won’t be able to enact their legislative priorities with President Donald Trump still in the White House for another two years, but they can make his job a lot harder — including by demanding documents, calling Cabinet secretaries to testify and issuing subpoenas.
Lawmakers and aides have been consulting with outside groups like the League of Conservation Voters to scrutinize administration officials and their industry connections. Natural Resources Democrats already have a list of probes they want to pursue.
“There’s a whole suite of things we’ve already teed up that we will definitely follow through on,” Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), the Natural Resources Committee ranking member, said during an interview last week.
