Early this week, the Nature Conservancy’s website touted the group’s work in the “Gulf of America,” a labeling change made in the wake of President Donald Trump’s move to rename the international body of water.

But following reporting about the group changing the way it referred to the gulf, the conservation group by Wednesday altered its website in one location to refer to “the Gulf,” adding further explanation of when it would use the “Gulf of America” versus the “Gulf of Mexico.”

POLITICO’s E&E News reported on the Nature Conservancy’s labeling of the gulf on Tuesday. The New Republic ran a story Wednesday titled, “The Nature Conservancy’s Embarrassing Capitulation to Trump.”

The Nature Conservancy did not respond to E&E News’ requests for comment Tuesday about its decision to update its website to refer to the “Gulf of America.” But by Wednesday, the group had updated its website with a new explanation about how it was approaching the label.
