John “J.B.” McCuskey is poised to become one of the leading allies of President-elect Donald Trump’s climate and energy policies.

The newly elected attorney general of West Virginia handily won the race to fill the post vacated by his close friend and fellow Republican, the state’s Gov.-elect Patrick Morrisey. McCuskey was one of a handful of new state attorneys general elected Tuesday.

Under Morrisey’s leadership, West Virginia emerged as a leader in multistate litigation to rein in Obama and Biden administration energy and environmental regulations — including EPA climate rules for the power sector. Those lawsuits have helped clear a path for Trump’s efforts to undo those regulations, said McCuskey, who called the president-elect a champion of energy security for the nation and coal-rich West Virginia.
