New York is celebrating the launch of the Champlain Hudson Power Express, a transmission line delivering hydropower from Quebec to New York City.

The contract for New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to buy renewable energy credits from Hydro Quebec starts today after the CHPE transmission line became operational last month ahead of schedule.

“We are building our energy future right here in NY,” NYSERDA President Doreen Harris wrote in a Linkedin post.

The 1,250-megawatt line will deliver much needed renewable energy to New York City — a region that relies on fossil fuels due to a lack of transmission infrastructure to the city. CHPE will power all of New York City’s government operations as well as 20 percent of its electric load. Harris estimated the line would cut carbon emissions by 3.7 million tons per year, the equivalent of removing 44 percent of vehicles from New York City’s streets.
