California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday voiced displeasure over power companies paying their executives bonuses in the wake of wildfires ignited by company equipment.

The comments were the Democratic governor’s first public remarks following news he is pushing for an end-of-session bill to reshape how the state compensates wildfire victims when power companies are to blame.

What happened: Speaking at a press conference in Oakland, Newsom acknowledged that his office has developed a wildfire liability proposal that he expects state leaders to debate in coming weeks.

“The status quo doesn’t work, it’s not good for victims, timely payments,” Newsom said. “The insurance industry is being squeezed.”
