NextEra sees boom in renewable orders as it plans gas build-out

The energy giant is planning to build enormous amounts of power generation as data centers reshape the U.S. electric grid.

The data center boom is lifting renewables and fossil fuels alike.

That dynamic was on display Thursday when NextEra Energy said renewable orders hit a quarterly record, even as the company advanced a plan to build two of the country’s largest natural gas plants.

NextEra is among the largest power plant developers in the U.S., making its moves a leading indicator of how the race to power data centers is unfolding.

“We’re a big believer that, you know, gas is needed and it’s going to provide a big impact. But it’s not quick, right, to get the market and solar and storage are,” NextEra CEO John Ketchum told financial analysts Thursday. “We have positioned our company around the ability to seize upon those opportunities.”
