NOAA rolls out Arctic strategy as Trump turns up geopolitical heat

The agency’s updated strategy addresses the impacts of a warming climate on the regional economy and security.

The Biden administration released an updated Arctic strategy Wednesday focused on helping Native Alaskans meet the worsening impacts of climate change amid accelerated glacial melting and rising geopolitical tensions.

NOAA’s “Arctic Vision and Strategy” is primarily a science document, but it also speaks to how climate warming will disrupt the regional economy and security.

It also comes as President-elect Donald Trump has revived a controversial proposal to acquire Greenland from Denmark. The 836,000-square-mile island, covered 80 percent in ice, sits strategically between the northern Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic Circle.

In an interview on Fox News, Trump’s pick for national security adviser, Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.), said the Greenland proposal is more than hyperbole.
