Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has approved a new 10-year lease with a natural gas pipeline company to use a historic airfield in New York managed by the National Park Service for its infrastructure.

Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area on the coast of Long Island, drew public attention during the Biden administration after it was repurposed as a shelter for New York City to house migrants. New York City Mayor Eric Adams closed the facility in January.

The use of National Park Service land to house the migrants sparked pushback from congressional Republicans and criticism of former President Joe Biden.

Burgum shared that criticism in a statement Friday.
