ALBANY, New York — Multiple downstate regions face reliability issues over the next few years, the state’s independent electric grid operator found.

The New York Independent System Operator, which ensures the electric grid can meet demand and keep the lights on, found reliability violations in New York City next year, Long Island in 2027 and the Hudson Valley region in 2030. The shortfalls were identified in NYISO’s regular quarterly reliability assessment released on Monday, triggering a process to fill the gap.

NYISO spokesperson Kevin Lanahan said the reliability warnings show the grid operator’s process is working to flag issues with enough time to implement solutions.

“But we still have concerns. Going forward, we see demand going up steadily,” Lanahan said.
