The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has scheduled a markup this week on legislation that would give the president power to rework the federal government.

The “Reorganizing Government Act” from Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) is meant to complement President Donald Trump’s agenda to cut the bureaucracy.

H.R. 1295 would give the president power through 2026 to propose deep changes to the executive branch and have Congress vote within 90 days on whether to approve the reforms. The Senate filibuster would not apply.

“The federal bureaucracy has grown dramatically in size and scope, creating unnecessary red tape,” Comer said in a statement last month. “We must cut through the inefficiency and streamline government to improve service delivery and save taxpayers money.”
