Lawmakers and Western ranchers on Tuesday chewed over the deployment of “experimental” wildlife populations under the Endangered Species Act.

Citing in particular certain high-profile predators, the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations focused on alleged problems caused by the ESA’s decades-old experimental population provision.

“By ignoring local input, before and after their introduction, the Fish and Wildlife Service has allowed animals like bears and wolves to wreak havoc,” said Chair Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.).
