The shuttered State Department office had drawn the ire of conservatives. Many lawmakers want it back.

House lawmakers this week will take up bipartisan language that would reestablish a State Department energy diplomacy bureau the Trump administration shuttered last year.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday is slated to mark up an amended version of H.R. 7037, the “Developing Overseas Mineral Investments and New Allied Networks for Critical Energies (DOMINANCE) Act,” from Reps. Young Kim (R-Calif.) and Ami Bera (D-Calif.). The bill has more than two dozen bipartisan co-sponsors.

The language would reestablish an office that’s akin to the Bureau of Energy Resources, which was eliminated last year as part of federal reorganization efforts.

That office helped connect U.S. exporters of domestic oil, gas and renewable energy technology to buyers overseas. Its work was folded into an economics and business affairs section at the department.
