The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee will vote this week on legislation that would relax requirements on states around disaster funds and building codes.

At a Wednesday markup, lawmakers will consider H.R. 744, the “Disaster Management Costs Modernization Act,” from Rep. Joe Neguse (D-Colo.).

The bill would let state or local governments shift excess disaster funds to other recovery or damage mitigation projects. A version of the bill passed the House in December but was not taken up by the Senate.

Neguse called the bill “a commonsense way to cut red tape and ultimately benefit communities across the West and indeed across the country as they continue to grapple with natural disasters in the years ahead.”
