Wisconsin would get its very first national park, under a bill set for a hearing this week before a House Natural Resources subcommittee.

The bill sponsored by Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.) would redesignate the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore as the Apostle Islands National Park and Preserve.

The lakeshore, designated in 1970, encompasses more than 69,000 acres, including more than 27,00 acres of submerged lands in Lake Superior.

As of Friday, Tiffany, chair of the Subcommittee on Federal Lands, had yet to formally introduce the bill. But he told a Wisconsin news outlet that the legislation will be ready for a Wednesday hearing before his panel.
