Park visits rose in 2023 but fell short of pre-pandemic highs

In its annual attendance report, the National Park Service said it drew 325.5 million visitors in 2023, an increase of 13 million from 2022.

Attendance at the country’s national parks grew by 4 percent in 2023, with 20 sites setting new records for visitation, the National Park Service said Thursday.

Overall, the number of recreation visits at the 400 park sites that count attendance hit 325.5 million, an increase of 13 million from 2022, the agency said in its annual attendance report.

The numbers still fell well short of the pre-pandemic attendance of 327.5 million in 2019 and the all-time high of nearly 331 million in 2016.

NPS now has 429 park sites, but not all of them track visitation.
