Iroquois wants to start construction on part of its project to bring more gas to downstate New York without securing permits from Connecticut for the full expansion.

ALBANY, New York — A pipeline owner has asked federal regulators for permission to begin upgrades to compressor stations in New York before it receives key permits from Connecticut.

The Iroquois Enhancement by Compression, or “ExC,” project would bring more gas into the New York City region. It involves upgrades at two compressor stations in New York and two in Connecticut.

Iroquois, the pipeline company, asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Friday for authorization to start work on the two New York facilities and one of the Connecticut sites where permits have been secured. The company is still waiting on a key air permit for work at the Brookfield, Connecticut compressor station, which faces significant local opposition.

Why it matters: Gov. Kathy Hochul’s administration issued key permits for the pipeline project last year after finding it was needed for reliability to ensure there’s enough gas coming into the region on the coldest winter days.
