Countries pledged to triple renewable energy capacity worldwide at the international climate talks two years ago. But since then their individual targets for hitting that goal have barely budged.

That could threaten global efforts to slow down temperature increases and discourage a technological transition to cleaner energy, according to a new analysis by Ember, an energy think tank.

“Ultimately, the purpose of national renewables targets is not just about getting renewables deployed, but also about making sure they are built smarter,” said Katye Altieri, an electricity analyst at Ember.

Renewable energy targets can provide certainty for investors, help governments integrate wind and solar into their grids, and prevent stranded fossil fuel assets, she added.
