California has long had some of the priciest gasoline in the nation. But with the Iran war sending fuel prices soaring across the globe, sticker shock in the Golden State has become a national story.
Right now, the average price for a gallon of gas in California is $5.88, according to AAA. That’s the highest of any state, and $1.83 above the national average.
Political leaders are taking notice. On Wednesday, four state lawmakers wrote a letter to California Energy Commission Vice Chair Siva Gunda demanding a plan to address “a supply chain already in crisis” and criticizing California’s “overreliance on global markets.”
As prices have risen, California’s oil industry and its allies have slammed the state for increasing gasoline imports, spurred by two refineries idling.
