Q&A: Republican Pete Stauber on Trump’s mining plans

The senior Natural Resources Committee lawmaker has given President-elect Donald Trump’s team advice on the issue.

Republican Rep. Pete Stauber of Minnesota has for months been sharing his desire for more domestic mining with President-elect Donald Trump’s aides.

Now Stauber, who chairs the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources, is expecting big shifts in his home state and beyond.

“We’ve talked to the transition team, they understand the need, they know what’s happening, not only Minnesota, but across the nation, what the Biden administration has done,” Stauber told POLITICO’s E&E News. “President Trump and his administration have the willpower to open up mining in the United States.”

Stauber’s congressional district, home to Minnesota’s mineral-rich Iron Range, has long been on Trump’s radar. This summer, he vowed at a campaign rally in St. Cloud to turn the region into a “mineral powerhouse like never before” and reverse a 20-year mining ban the outgoing administration imposed in the state.
