An 81-year-old Montana rancher was sentenced to six months in prison Monday after admitting to illegally breeding megasheep for sale to private hunting preserves.

Arthur “Jack” Schubarth pled guilty earlier this year to two federal felony charges of wildlife trafficking and conspiring to commit wildlife trafficking.

Investigators found that over nearly a decade, Schubarth conspired with others to breed large sheep in an effort that involved obtaining sheep parts from Kyrgyzstan, cloning genetic material and facilitating illegal sheep insemination.

In addition to jail time, Schubarth will have to pay roughly $24,000 in fines. His attorney declined to comment on the sentencing before the publication deadline.
