EPA Administrator Michael Regan on Wednesday afternoon highlighted the Biden administration’s work to combat climate change and promote environmental justice even as he sounded an urgent note for further action.

America “needs a strong EPA,” Regan said in a brief keynote address at the World Climate Summit in New York City.

While the future is bright, “we have to get this right,” he told the audience. “We only have one planet, and you and I will play a critical role to ensure that we leave our planet better than we found it.”

With the presidential election less than two months away, Regan recounted an array of regulatory and financing steps taken by the administration since 2021. Those included the removal of more than 220,000 lead drinking water service lines, creation of the $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund and implementation of stronger vehicle tailpipe standards predicted to avert billions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions in the long term.
