Republicans confront CPSC members on gas stove ban

The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s chair assured lawmakers again Tuesday that the agency has no plans to ban natural gas stoves.

Remarks from Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr., son of the late labor leader, set off a political firestorm last year, which pushed the White House to weigh in.

House Republicans revived the issue Tuesday during a hearing of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Innovation, Data and Commerce.

“When we started this Congress last year, we read reports that Commissioner Trumka had discussed the idea of a universal ban on gas stoves in this country. The American people have made it clear to us this type of government overreach is unacceptable,” said Chair Gus Bilirakis (R-Fla.).
