Senate Majority Leader John Thune is looking to begin the process Tuesday of taking up legislation to keep the Department of Homeland Security from shutting down at the end of the week.
The Homeland Security spending bill is the only outstanding for fiscal 2026. Democrats balked at passing a previous compromise after immigration enforcement officers shot and killed a protester in Minneapolis.
Even though parties are trading offers, its unlikely they will settle on a spending bill that can pass by midnight Friday. That’s why Thune is preparing a continuing resolution.
The Department of Homeland Security’s key functions would continue operating during a shutdown but an extended impasse would delay the approval of new disaster relief dollars.
