Republicans question giving Cruz broad subpoena power

Sen. Ted Cruz’s bid for broad subpoena power as chair of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee is running into concerns from fellow Republicans.

After weighing the decision for nearly a month, GOP panel member met last week to discuss whether to give Cruz (R-Texas) the unilateral subpoena authority, according to two people familiar with the private meeting.

At issue is whether Cruz can, for example, force technology company CEOs to testify without needing signoff from the panel’s top Democrat or a vote by the full committee.

One person granted anonymity to speak candidly about the situation said there is concern among some Republicans about breaking long-standing precedent.
