Senate Republicans launched a new effort Tuesday to repeal energy efficiency standards for certain incandescent light bulbs.

Energy and Natural Resources Chair Mike Lee (R-Utah) introduced the “Liberating Incandescent Technology (LIT) Act,” a bill that would prevent the Department of Energy from setting efficiency standards for general service lamps and repeal three related regulations.

Specifically, the bill targets Biden administration rules from 2022 and 2024 intended to gradually raise the minimum efficiency for incandescent light bulbs to 45 lumens per watt and then to 120 lumens per watt.

“These regulations have nothing to do with saving the planet — they’re about controlling people,“ Lee said in a statement. “If the federal government can dictate the type of lightbulb you use, what can’t it dictate? Americans don’t need Washington to micromanage their light switches.”
