Right-wing lawmakers move to halt EU green funding program

A member of the European Parliament argued that “the program provides insufficient financial control and accountability” for nongovernmental organizations.

A group of center-right and far-right MEPs is pushing to halt the implementation of the EU LIFE program to stop funding for environmental programs until 2027, according to documents seen by POLITICO.

In the latest twist in an ongoing fight over EU funding of nongovernmental organizations, members of the European Parliament of the center-right European People’s Party and of the far-right Patriots of Europe groups have filed motions to block the draft 2025-2027 work plan of the LIFE program for environmental and climate action.

The adoption of this plan by Parliament and the Council of the EU, representing the 27 member countries, is usually just a formality.

But right-wing forces are seizing it as an opportunity to try to stop funding for green NGOs working on advocacy in Brussels and benefiting from the LIFE program. It’s also an opportunity for them to keep pressing the European Commission on allegations that it used NGOs to lobby in favor of the Green Deal on its behalf, claims that POLITICO debunked.
