A plan to renovate a dilapidated golf course in Rock Creek Park in Washington — including cutting down more than 1,000 trees — won final approval Thursday night from the National Capital Planning Commission.
Environmental activists and neighborhood advocates had objected to the National Park Service’s plan for the golf course renovation, saying too many large trees would be removed, which would disturb wildlife.
But NPS officials have argued that Rock Creek Park Golf Course is in dire need of renovations.
NPS manages three historic public golf courses in Washington, including the one in Rock Creek, as well as Langston Golf Course and East Potomac Golf Course. The federal agency has signed a 50-year agreement with the National Links Trust, a nonprofit group that advocates for accessible and affordable municipal golf, to rehabilitate all three courses.
