The Trump administration is eliminating the climate envoy office as part of a sweeping plan to overhaul the State Department announced Tuesday.
The Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate led U.S. climate diplomacy by engaging other countries in efforts to cut climate pollution and boost funding to address the effects of rising temperatures.
Former Secretary of State John Kerry was the only person to ever hold the position, after being named special presidential climate envoy by former President Joe Biden. He led U.S. delegations to annual talks focused on meeting the goals of the Paris climate agreement, the international pact to address global warming.
A State Department official confirmed the office’s elimination.
