Say goodbye to Senate committee’s focus on climate change

The Senate Budget Committee has devoted more than a dozen hearings over the last two years to the issue of climate change, which Democrats say is inextricably linked to U.S. spending and revenue.

That’s likely no more.

Republicans on Tuesday seized control of the Senate, which means Democrats will no longer lead its committees in the next Congress. That includes Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, a climate hawk who chairs the Budget Committee.

Whitehouse has used the perch to highlight issues including climate risk in insurance markets and the oil and gas industry’s “evolving efforts to avoid accountability for climate change.”
